Thajiwas Glacier

Even during peak summer months (June-August), the glacier retains significant snow and ice, allowing visitors to experience snow play in warm weather. The trail passes through wildflower meadows and alpine forests before opening up to reveal the gleaming ice face.
Pony rides to the glacier cost approximately ₹800-₹1,200 per person (round trip). The ride takes about 30-40 minutes each way. Walking is free but takes 45-60 minutes uphill. At the glacier, you can rent rubber sledges (₹100-₹200) for snow sliding — a favorite activity for both children and adults.
Zero Point (Machoi Glacier)
Zero Point, located 25 km beyond Sonamarg on the road towards Ladakh, is where civilian traffic ends and the military zone begins. At 15,000 feet, it offers some of the most dramatic Himalayan views accessible by road in Kashmir. Snow remains here year-round, and the landscape is stark, high-altitude desert — a complete contrast to the green valley below.
The drive from Sonamarg to Zero Point takes about 1.5-2 hours and passes through increasingly dramatic terrain. The road is only open from June to October (or when the army clears snow). A rented vehicle from Sonamarg costs approximately ₹3,000-₹5,000 for the return trip. The views of glacial moraines, frozen lakes, and 360-degree mountain panoramas make it absolutely worthwhile.
Baltal Valley
Baltal, 15 km from Sonamarg, is the shorter (and steeper) base camp route for the Amarnath Yatra. Outside of the pilgrimage season, it is a stunningly beautiful valley with rushing rivers, waterfalls, and a sense of remote wilderness. The drive itself is an attraction — the road narrows, crosses rickety bridges, and winds through pristine forests.
Vishansar and Krishnasar Lakes (Trek)
For serious trekkers, the twin alpine lakes of Vishansar and Krishnasar are among the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in the Himalayas. Located at approximately 12,000 feet, these crystalline glacial lakes reflect the surrounding snow peaks like perfect mirrors. The trek from Sonamarg takes 2-3 days and passes through Nichnai Pass, making it a moderate-to-challenging multi-day adventure.

How to Reach Sonamarg
From Srinagar: 80 km northeast via NH1 (approximately 2.5-3 hours). The road follows the beautiful Sindh River valley, passing through Kangan and Ganderbal. The drive itself is one of the most scenic in Kashmir.
From Srinagar Airport: 87 km (approximately 2.5-3 hours by taxi).
From Pahalgam: No direct road. Drive via Srinagar (4-5 hours total).
Road condition: NH1 is a national highway and generally well-maintained. However, landslides can occasionally block the road during heavy rains (July-August). Check road status before departing during monsoon.
Where to Stay
Sonamarg has limited but growing accommodation options. Most visitors do a day trip from Srinagar, but staying overnight allows you to experience the valley at its most peaceful — after day-trippers leave.
- Tourist huts (J&K Tourism): Government-run accommodation with basic amenities. ₹1,000-₹3,000/night.
- Private hotels and guesthouses: Several options along the main road with mountain views. ₹2,000-₹6,000/night.

Note: Most accommodations in Sonamarg are only open from April/May to October/November. The area is largely shut in winter due to heavy snowfall and road closures.

July-August: Full summer, meadows at their greenest. Zero Point accessible. Occasional rain but dramatic cloud formations.
September-October: Autumn colours, clear views, fewer tourists. Best weather for trekking. Nights get cold.
November-April: Road often closed due to snow. Not accessible for regular tourists.
